Incorporate Safety and Health elements in Work Processes

SANDAKAN: Incorporating the safety and health elements into the work processes is important, said Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Liew Vui Keong.

According to him, no amount of law enforcement and raising the awareness is sufficient without the tacit effort and commitment among employers and employees to ensure healthy and safe working environment which have been proven in developed countries to reduce accidents in the workplace.

“The incorporation of the elements is intended to identify potential hazards likely to be encountered in each work process and to initiate preventive measures to avoid them,” he said.

Liew stressed that occupational safety and health management cannot be viewed in isolation in the total management of an organisation because of its close link to productivity.

He said this at a campaign and exhibition on Occupational Safety, Health and Environment (OSHE) organised by TM Sabah yesterday.

The exhibition is held at TM Elopura over two days from May 16.

General manager of TM Sabah, Haji Sukkuriya Haji Masrie, said the event was organised with the primary objective of increasing the awareness and understanding of the importance of safety at the workplace as well as encouraging TM Sabah employees and its contractors to lead the healthy lifestyle.

The event is also meant to portray TM as a caring employer which emphasises on the essential components of the staff’s well-being, safety and health.

According to Haji Sukkuriya, TM has introduced accident-free awards to further inculcate the safety culture in the company.

A host of interesting programmes have been lined up during the two-day event, including a demonstration by the Fire and Rescue Department and the Civil Defence Department on the rescue methods of victims from mishaps as well as fighting a simulated fire on the fourth floor of TM Elopura Sandakan building.

Booths on OSHE awareness were displayed by the Sandakan Municipal Council, the Work Safety and Health Department, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, the Road Safety Department, the Health Department, the Department of Environment, the Civil Defence Department, the Fire and Rescue Department , the Royal Malaysia Police, the National Anti Drugs Agency, the Social Security Organisation and the Sabah Society for the Blind.
