OSHA: Sawmill Safety and Health Violations

Federal regulators say a Sandersville sawmill exposed workers to falls of as much as 18 feet and didn’t develop procedures to remove electrical power to dangerous equipment while it was being worked on.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced Monday it is citing Beasley Forest Products Inc. for 21 safety and health violations, with proposed penalties of $78,000.

Included in the complaint are 12 serious safety violations including improper use of compressed air for cleaning, a lack of guardrails and handrails on walkways and stairs, improper signage, improper machine guards, a damaged ladder, problems with access to a circuit breaker box and missing covers on electrical boxes, according to an OSHA statement.

OSHA said the company also failed to create a hazard communication program for people working with combustible dust, prevent the accumulation of combustible dust, launch a hearing conservation program, and properly store oxygen and acetyline cylinders. Those were termed serious health violations.

OSHA said serious violations leave a substantial probability that death or serious harm could result from hazards the employer knew, or should have known, about.

“This inspection has identified a range of hazards that include the accumulation of combustible dust, a clack of machine guarding and fall hazards,” said Bill Fulcher, director of OSHA’s Atlanta-East Area Office, in a statement. “Employers cannot wait for an OSHA inspection to identify the hazards that expose their employees to the possibility of serious injuries.”
