DOSH : Compliance still low

KUCHING: Only around 50 per cent of the construction and manufacturing industries in the state have implemented occupational safety and health (OSH) practices in the workplace.

Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) state director Dasuki Mohd Heak said while the sectors have improved, compliance is still low.

He said DOSH is willing to collaborate with these industries to ensure they understand the requirements and guidelines for safe work practices.

“For a start, to avoid unnecessary incidents, we want them to comply with the basic requirements of Dosh and to closely comply with the law to safeguard workers from unsafe work practices and accidents.

“If these organisations slowly comply and practise safe work practices in relation to OSH, they will achieve their objective and also bring better economic benefits both to them and their workers. The impact will be good for the country as a whole,” he said during a recent interview.

He stressed that DOSH would not compromise with companies that continue to ignore OSH requirements.

He urged workers, particularly in construction and manufacturing, to comply with their company’s OSH guidelines to avoid workplace accidents where they could endanger themselves and others.
Dasuki stressed that investors are concerned about OSH as it can also save costs and improve productivity when hours are not lost due to accidents.

He added that currently only the oil and gas industry in Sarawak, which has been operating for over 100 years, has a high standard of OSH practices.
