80 SMEs To Vie For MSOSH SME Award 2012

KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 (Bernama) - Eighty small and medium enterprises (SMEs) will vie for the Malaysian Society of Occupational Safety and Health (MSOSH) SME Award 2012, MSOSH President Fuad Abas said today.

"We'll see 80 SMEs vying for the award, but the number may even swell to 90," he told reporters at the award's soft launch.

Last year, 26 SMEs vied for the award.

Introduced in 2010, the award is hosted by MSOSH in collaboration with SME Corp Malaysia.

Fuad said occupational safety and health (OSH) awareness in Malaysia has improved significantly over the years.

The award significantly presents an opportunity for public recognition and leadership of the industry's accomplishment in demonstrating OSH stewardship and fostering safety culture.

Auditors for the site verification audit are from SME Corp Malaysia, Social Security Organisation, Department of Occupational Safety and Health, Malaysia Institute of Road Safety Research, SIRIM Bhd, National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, Malaysian Employers Federation, MSOSH and industry representatives.

Also present at the launch was SME Corp Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Hafsah Hashim who expressed hope that many companies will take the initiative to enhance their OSH measures, and thereby reduce the incidence of injuries and illnesses in the workplace.

"MSOSH as well as SME Corp are not sitting idly by watching and waiting for others to step up, instead we have taken matters into our own hands and instituted proactive measures to encourage the necessity of occupational safety and health among the local SMEs," Hafsah added.

The soft launch is to create awareness and also mark the commencement of submission for applications, which will close on Aug 31, 2012.

Site verification audits shall commence from Sept 9 to Oct 15, 2012, and the winners will receive their trophies, certificates and due recognition at an award dinner in November.
