Over 50% SMEs Not Serious About Safety Of Workers

KUALA TERENGGANU, Dec 7 (Bernama) - Over 50 percent small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Terengganu don't give serious attention to Occupational Safety Health Management System (OSHMS).

Pahang Occupational Safety and Health Department deputy director Zulkifli Yahaya said SME workers were constantly exposed to accidents at workplaces due to disorganised health care.

He said the companies in particular those in food manufacturing did not pay attention to safety regulations at their premises.

"Although the SME sector has yet to record cases of fatal accidents, we found that over 50 percent don't give attention to OSHMS," he said after opening a seminar on OSHMS Regulations 2011 Indoor Air Quality Industry Code of Practice 2010 Chemicals Risk Assessment to Health of Workers In Generic here Wednesday.

Cases of fatal accidents at work in Terengganu was still low, with the construction industry the most with four cases followed by trade (2) and manufacturing (1).

Zulkifli also said the department was satisfied with the chemical and petroleum sector as the level of compliance to health and safety of workers was high.

This was because employers were aware of the harmful effects if chemical and petroleum materials sensitive to the environment were not handled with care.
